Titanic Chapter 3After being personally greeted by Captain Drake, Mivashkama, Morfious, Oleana, Serena, and Molly headed straight for their suite on B Deck. Mivashkama thought it silly to bother saying goodbye to primarily second or third class people at the dock when there was much to unpack. The officer at the dock proved worthy of the tip Mivashkama gave with the luggage already at their suite and a few men awaiting orders on where to put them. Morfious began ordering the staff where everything went on his master's behalf. Meanwhile, Mivashkama, Oleana, and Serena went to their respective bedrooms to unpack their personal things. Molly went with Serena to help her unpack. Serena couldn't deny that the rooms were very fancy, with fine wooden walls, and fancy furniture. Still, she wished Oleana had kept her collection of paintings and family portraits so she could personalize the rooms and give them color.Serena and Molly had just finished unpacking when Oleana came in without knocking, her eyes instantly on Serena. “Serena, we're meeting Mivashkama’s business partners for lunch in 20 minutes,” Oleana announced. “Molly, have her changed into her new yellow spring dress.”“Yes, ma'am,” Molly said. Oleana left, closing the door behind her before she could see Serena give her a cold look. Serena couldn't deny that she was hungry as neither of them had eaten since the night before, but she wasn't thrilled about eating with her fiance's partners, who she assumed were just as uptight and self-centered as he was. With a huff, Serena turned around to face her bed to allow Molly to change into her spring dress. As far as dresses go back then, it was an acceptable or modern type of yellow becoming of a lady of first class. In Serena's eyes, it was the ugliest thing she had ever seen, much less worn. In fact, anything Oleana bought with the stimulus Mivashkama gave her, even for her own wardrobe, was ghastly to Serena regardless if it was the latest trend. Serena would have preferred that she choose her own clothes. Still, whenever she brought it up with Oliana before leaving Viridian City, Oleana would claim superiority by reminding Serena that she was the head of the family. Only her choices mattered for their survival. In times like this, Serena began to wonder what her father saw in Oleana as a wife and a stepmother, Lord, rest his soul. With her new dress on, Serena exited her bedroom to find Mivashkama and Oliana waiting for her. Mivashkama wore a clean black suit with a maroon vest and white bow tie, and Oleana was wearing a green dress with white, bushy sleeves. Serena resisted the urge to squirm at the sight of her stepmother's dress which she thought was tacky at best, as Mivashkama took her hand. Molly and Morfious bowed to Mivashkama and Oleana as their employers, and Serena exited the cabin. Oleana and Serena followed Mivashkama to the Grand Staircase, where they went down the steps to the first-class dining saloon on D Deck. The saloon was already filled with other first-class passengers, many of whom were chatting more than they were eating their lunch. Men talked about business, women gossiped, and some just listened and made the occasional response out of respect. There was a band playing calm, classical music by the windows. No one seemed to have paid any mind to them, but the band seemed content to play. Mivashkama guided the women to a table at the center of the dining saloon, where three people were already seated. Two were men in fine gray suits. The oldest was a tan man in his 40s with streaks of gray hair. His suit contained a red vest, a green tie, and gold cufflinks with the words M.C. etched on them. The second man was in his 30s and had short brown hair. His suit contained a purple vest and tie with silver cufflinks. Sitting next to him on the right side of the table was a woman also in her 30s with long, curly peach hair wearing a pink and dark red dress. The tan man sat on the left end of the table with a glass of brandy in his left hand while the younger man and the woman were locked in conversation. The older man stared at the menu until he noticed Mivashkama, Oleana, and Serena walking over to them. “There you are, Mivashkama,” he said. “I was getting so hungry that I was beginning to think we should order without you.”“Apologies, Rose. It took a while to get settled in,” Mivashkama said. “Ladies, this is Chairman Rose. He is the head of Macro Cosmos. Rose, this is my fiancee, Serena.”“Ah, yes. Your fiancee. Congratulations to the both of you,” Chairman Roe said before turning to Oleana. “And you must be her mother. Am I right, madam?”For a few seconds, Oleana stared at Chairman Rose with her cheeks turning a subtle shade of red. Mivashkama and Serena looked at her confused as Oleana stared as though the chairman was a dashing man half her age looking at her with a devil-may-care grin. Finally, Oleana realized she was staring for too long, and her blush grew as she cleared her throat. “Stepmother, actually, but please call me Oleana,” she said. Chairman Rose chuckled and gently took Oleana's hand to kiss it. “Well then, enchanté, Oleana," he said.Oleana giggled, feeling like a schoolgirl blushing over her crush. Mivashkama and Serena looked at each other, silently agreeing that Oleana's demeanor was odd. The brown-haired man and the peach-haired woman noticed Chairman Rose was out of his seat and stood up to greet the people he was talking to. The chairman noticed them coming and let go of Oleana's hand. "Ah, yes. Further instructions are in order," he said. "Allow me to introduce Macro Cosmo's Master Shipbuilder, Timothy Durbin, and Archeologist Sonia Magnolia."In case it isn't clear, dear reader, the second person introduced was my Aunt Sonia. History acknowledges Aunt Sonia as the Heroine of the Titanic, but her spirit would haunt me to my grave if I didn't say there's more to remember than her deeds during and after the sinking. Aunt Sonia was the granddaughter of a well-renowned historian in the Galar region, who was a good friend of Chairman Rose. When Titanic was on its maiden voyage, Aunt Sonia had been an archeologist for four years despite women not commonly allowed to have such occupations and spent time in Kanto searching for ruins of the lost city of Pokémopolis. In the third year of her expedition, she found the lost city south of Pallet Town and made a name for herself. You might have heard that another female archeologist named Dr. Eve found the lost city, but history has proven that Dr. Eve tried to take credit for many archeologist discoveries at the time. She claimed to have found Pokémopolis while Aunt Sonia and her team were doing all the work. Still, the evidence shows that Aunt Sonia, as she lovingly put it to me growing up, beat that "good-for-nothing, stiff-necked, self-important wanton" by several days. As a reward, Chairman Rose ensured Sonia was given a first-class ticket when she decided to go back to Galar to report her findings, where her occupation would land her a second-class ticket at best. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Lord Herløv,” Aunt Sonia said with a cheerful smile. “And congratulations to you and your fiancee on your engagement.”“Thank you kindly, Sonia, and please just call me Mivashkama. Any friend of Rose and Timothy's is a friend of mine,” Mivashkama said with a smile. “All right, Mivashkama, it is,” Aunt Sonia said. Serena looked at Mivashkama with a hint of concern, still feeling his cheerful demeanor hollow. Her thoughts were interrupted when the brown-haired man stepped up in front of her. “Begging your pardon, madam, but you look familiar,” Timothy said. “By any chance, would you happen to be Serena Yvonne, the performer?”Serena's eyes glimmered as she looked at Timothy, surprised. “Yes, I am,” she answered. Timothy's curious look turned into a warm smile as he held Serena's hands up. “Well, I’ll be doggone. I'm an admirer of your dancing, my lady,” he said. “I was at one of your performances in Vermillion City with a few colleagues. From the bottom of my heart, I never seen such beautiful dancing."“Oh, thank you. I'm happy to hear that, Mr. Durbin,” Serena said.“Yes, yes, Serena was a nice dancer,” Oleana said. “However, since Serena will be a lady when married to Lord Herløv, she will not be partaking in any more performances.”“Really? That's a shame to hear,” Timothy said, his smile weakening. “Surely you have seen your fiancee perform yourself, Mivashkama.”“No, and there is no need,” Mivashkama said. “And I would appreciate it if you do not bring up the matter again, Timothy.”Timothy looked at Mivashkama, astonished that he thought so little of Serena's talent. He furrowed his brow and nodded in respect, perhaps accepting that it was a private matter. Serena felt as though there was an open door allowing her a moment to connect with someone, only to have it closed in front of her just as she took the first step. She looked down at the floor, trying to hide her disappointment as Chairman Rose cleared his throat. “Well, now that introductions have been made, shall we start ordering?” he asked. “Absolutely. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm so famished I could eat a whole chicken, head and all,” Sonia said. Timothy chuckled, and there was an edge of a smirk on Serena's face. Chairman Rose, Oleana, and Mivashkama looked at each other, finding Aunt Sonia's expression improper. The chairman cleared his throat again and gestured to the group to the table. They all sat down with Chairman Rose and Oleana sitting on opposite ends, Timothy and Sonia sat next to each other on the right, and Mivashkama and Serena sat next to each other on the left. Chairman Rose helped Oleana to her seat, which made her blush again. The chairman gave her a warm smile that made her heart skip a beat as he returned to his seat on the other end of the table. “So, have you three settled in just fine?” He asked."Oh, yes indeed," Oleana said before Mivashkama could speak. "Our rooms are simply gorgeous, and your ship itself is magnificent. You must be very proud, Mr. Chairman.""Oh, please, do call me Rose, Oleana," the chairman said, making Oleana's cheeks turn pink again for already going on a first-name basis with him. "And, yes. I am very proud indeed. She is the largest moving object ever made by the hand of man in all of history. But I must say I owe the accomplishment to Timothy.""Oh, come now, Rose. You give me too much credit," Timothy said."Nonsense, my good man. You designed your masterpiece from the keel plates up," Chairman Rose said. "Frankly, I think we should have added your name to Titanic's full name when we had the chance. The Macro Cosmos Herløv Durbin Titanic or the MCHD Titanic. A mouthful, I grant you, but it's only fitting.""I may have knocked her together, but the ship was your idea," Timothy said before turning to Mivashkama, Oleana, and Serena. "He envisioned a steamer so grand in scale and so luxurious in its appointments that its supremacy could never be challenged. Not to mention that Mivashkama's generous funding willed her into solid reality.""What can I say, gentlemen? I know a good business opportunity when I hear it, and yours involves making history," Mivashkama boasted."Well, whatever the case, your ship has made history, Rose. And may its supremacy reign forever," Oleana said."Hear, hear," Chairman Rose, Mivashkama, and Timothy said simultaneously.Serena' frown deepened as everyone but her and Aunt Sonia praised the ship. She still couldn't deny the impressive feet that Titanic was, but at the same time, she feared the extent that creating the ship had built everyone's ego to the point that her stepmother was infatuated with the head of Macro Cosmos. She turned to Aunt Sonia, who noticed Serena looking at her, and the peach-haired woman smirked, glancing at the three men and then rolling her eyes. Serena lightly chuckled, careful that no one could hear her as a waiter approached them."Are you ready, sir?" The waiter asked. "Yes. My fiancee and I will both have the lamb rare with very little mint sauce," Mivashkama said. "You like lamb, right, Serenie?"In truth, Serena cared very little about meat apart from chicken and certain fish. She also would rather eat all her least favorite foods at once than hear Mivashkama call her by that name again. Serena could feel Oleana's gaze next to her. If they weren't in public, Oleana would tell Serena not to make Mivashkama look like a fool for ordering something she didn't want and for calling her something she hated. With no other choice, Serena turned to Mivashkama and forced a smile that satisfied him. Aunt Sonia raised her eyebrow as she ordered without looking at her waiter. As the waiters left with a bow, Aunt Sonia smirked as she decided to speak up. “You plan to cut her meat as well, Mivashkama?” she asked teasingly. Mivashkama and Oleana gave Aunt Sonia looks that made her uneasy. She cleared her throat and put on a friendly smile as she turned to the chairman. “So, I’ve been meaning to ask. Did you come up with the name Titanic, Rose?” Aunt Sonia asked. “Yes, actually,” Chairman Rose said. “I wanted a name that conveys her size, and size means stability, luxury, and above all, strength.”Serena raised her eyebrow and an edge of a smirk appeared on her face as Chairman Rose spoke.“Have you ever read articles from Dr. Freud, Chairman Rose?” Serena asked. “His ideas about the male preoccupation with size might be of particular interest to you.” Aunt Sonia's eyes widened, covering her mouth with both hands to hide a wide smile. It took Timothy a moment for it to hit him before he snickered. Mivashkama glared at Serena disapprovingly while Oleana looked at her astounded. “What’s gotten into you?” Oleana whispered into Serena's ear.“Come on, stepmother. It's all in good fun,” Serena said. “I will not have you speaking vulgarly in front of the chairman and your fiancee. You’re going to be the Lady of Hammerlocke. Behave like one,” Oliana hissed. Serena scoffed and stood up from her seat, muttering, “Excuse me,” before walking away. Mivashkama opened his mouth to order her to come back, but Serena was already too far away. Timothy and Aunt Sonia glanced at each other, then Aunt Sonia smirked again as she turned back to Mivashkama. “She seems like a handful, Mivashkama. You think you can handle her?” She asked teasingly. Mivashkama restrained himself from giving another disapproving look and said, “Well, I'll certainly have to start minding what my fiancee reads from now on. Won't I?”“Freud? Who's Freud?" Chairman Rose asked, embarrassed. “Is he a passenger here?”****************************************It is a common mistake when discussing the history of the Titanic to believe that all the passengers in third class were dirt poor. In fact, while some passengers were having financial problems and seeking a better life in Galar, like Ash, Goh, and Chloe, being third-class simply meant being among members of the common people as opposed to people of first and second class, who were more financially successful. One third-class ticket to board the Titanic was about $35, which was a little over a grand in today's money. It is also a common mistake to say that third-class passengers were living in poor conditions on the Titanic, and granted, they had only two bathrooms to share at E Deck, and their cabins were small, consisting of two bunk beds. Even so, Chairman Rose was true to his word in making Titanic a place of luxury, providing third-class passengers with nicer living conditions than many of them were accustomed to. Their cabins had electricity and running water, and they had their own general room to have parties. Best of all, they were given three meals a day in two dining saloons on F Deck, unlike other steamships requiring them to bring their own food. They’d have oatmeal porridge and milk, ham, eggs, smoked herrings, jacket potatoes, bread, tea, and coffee for breakfast. Dinner contained rice soup, fresh bread, roast beef, gravy, corn, plum pudding, biscuits, gravy, and fruit. Supper consisted of gruel, biscuits, and cheese. In the general room, the third class passengers also had plenty of beer. It wasn't the same as having champagne and caviar, but for the third-class passengers, they felt like royalty. Many believed what they enjoyed was a taste of what they had in store in the Galar region. This was how Ash, Chole, and Goh felt when they finished looking at the horizon at the bow. They found their cabin and put their bags on their bunks before going to the first third class dining saloon, where they were served rice and carrot soup. They finished their lunch shortly before the first-class passengers finished unpacking and went to their lunch, for the common folk had fewer things to unpack. After eating, Ash, Goh, and Chloe decided to relax at the stern to relax and enjoy the bright sun and salty air. They sat by the railing on the starboard side, watching other passengers relax after their first meal on the ship. Eventually, Ash decided to take out his sketchbook and began to draw a chubby man and his daughter watching dolphins jumping close to the ship. Goh and Chloe stood up from their seats to watch the dolphins, with Chloe’s arm wrapped around Goh’s."Amazing creatures. Aren't they?" Chloe said."Yes, they are, my love," Goh said. "I've never seen dolphins in person before."“Me neither,” Ash said."I have."Ash, Goh, and Chloe turned to see a man with spiky mahogany hair. He was leaning against the railing while holding a cigarette, looking at the trio with a proud smirk."I used to ride ships from Vermilion City to Saffron City whenever my grandfather had to travel on business when I was a kid,” the mahoney-haired man said.“Is that so? Well, I bet you’ve never been on a beautiful ship like the Titanic before,” Chloe said."Well, I’m not one for making a fuss about appearances, but this Kanto ship is a beauty to be proud of,” the mahoney-haired man said."Kanto? Wasn't this made in Johto and funded by a company from Galar?" Goh asked. "Aw, Galar, schmalar. It's 15,000 Kantoian men who built this ship, myself included," the mahoney-haired man said, stomping his foot on the wooden floor. "I installed this floor myself. That's how I gained enough money to get myself a ticket. Just wish this part of the ship wasn't also where the stuffy, first-class punks take their dogs to do their business on my fine work. Typical that they would come all the way down here from their nice suites just for that. Isn't it?""Yeah, well, I guess designing a loo just for first-class pets just never crossed their minds," Ash said. "Or perhaps they prefer to take their dogs over here to remind us of our rank in the scheme of things.""Ha! Like we can forget," the maghoney-haired man said. "I’m Gary Oak, by the way.""Ash Ketchum," Ash said as he shook Gary's hand."And I'm Goh Walker. This is my wife, Chloe," Goh said."Nice to meet you," Chloe said. Gary gave Chloe a respectful nod as he shook her husband’s hand. As he stepped back to where he was standing, he noticed the drawing Ash was working on. Gary looked between the picture and the father and daughter, impressed with how well the picture was drawn. "You make any money with those drawings?" Gary asked. But instead of answering, Ash stared past Gary within an entranced look. Goh, Chole, and Gary looked in the direction he was looking to find Serena resting her arms on the railing on the balcony at B Deck. She stared at the sea, still peeved at Mivashkama and Oleana, but Ash remained captivated. Goh, and Chloe looked at each other, surprised as it hit them what their best friend was doing, but Gary laughed and shook his head. "Forget it, Ashy-Boy. You're more likely to have angels come flying out of your bum than to get with the likes of her," he said.Ash did not mind Gary's words, for he continued staring like Serena was the only other soul on the ship. Serena glanced in his direction momentarily before looking back at the sea. Then she looked back, noticing Ash staring at her. She didn't know why she was interested in the stranger staring at her, but she couldn't look away. Goh waved his hand in front of Ash, but his best friend ignored him. Goh turned to Chloe, who looked at Serena curiously as the first-class woman still stared back at Ash. She turned to Goh, and they smirked, intrigued with what was happening. Just then, Mivashkama walked over to Serena and took her arm, forcing her to look at him. Ash, Goh, Chloe, and Gary couldn't hear Serena and Mivashkama talking, but the latter was clearly displeased. Serena's frown deepened, and she walked away, leaving Mivashkama alone to scoff, wondering what to do with his defiant fiancee. With Serena out of sight, Ash returned to his drawing, forgetting that his friends were with him. Gary scratched his head, puzzled as he turned to Goh and Chloe."Have you ever seen a rich lady stare at your friend like that?" He asked. "Honestly, I've never seen him so interested in a woman like that before," Goh said.“Me neither,” Chloe said. Gary turned back at Ash, even more puzzled, but then decided to shrug and went back to his cigarette, concluding it was a crazy coincidence. Goh and Chloe took Gary’s disregard to go back to looking out at sea, but their minds were on Ash staring at Serena. As Ash finished his drawing, he held it up to himself and blew on it to get all the splinters off just as the father and daughter were leaving, having finished looking at the dolphins. He smiled fondly, pleased with this work, but then his smile faded, and he looked back to where he saw Serena. Perhaps he wanted to draw her next, or maybe he was curious why she was upset. Whatever the case, Serena was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and he hoped beyond reason that he would see her again....
Titanic Chapter 2On April 3rd, 1912, Oleana sold Yvonne Manor. The terms were set that she, Serena, and Molly would leave the estate for good the following day. The new owner was a dear friend of her father and promised Serena that he and his family would take great care of her old home in her father’s honor. Serena still dreaded leaving her childhood home, but was comforted to know that it would be in the care of someone close to her father. On April 4th, Oleana, Serena, and Molly packed what belongings they had left and were soon picked up by Mivashkama and Morfious. They rode in three cars: Mivashkama and Serena rode in the leading car, Oleana, Morfious, and Molly were in the second car, and the third one carried their luggage. They drove from Viridian City to Saffron City, taking a train to Goldenrod City in the Johto region. Three cars were waiting outside the train station to take them to Olivine City, where the Titanic was set to sail. Throughout the journey, Mivashkama and Serena shared a car or car room on the train. Their conversations were mostly one-sided, with Mivashkama talking about his business endeavors, family lineage, and life as a lord of Hammerlocke. Serena smiled and gave a polite response, half listening to his boasts. On April 9th, Mivshkama ordered the chauffeurs to drive through the night to ensure they reached Olivine City by 11:00 in the morning. Serena leaned her head against the window as she fell asleep. When she woke up, it was morning, and she saw countless people crowding the street. The chauffeur honked his horn, telling people to move away as he drove. Serena saw the sea at a distance, though it was hard to get a good look with people walking by, carrying suitcases or duffle bags over their shoulders. The car stopped, and the chauffeur got out of his seat to open Serena’s car door. Serena took his hand and stepped out to look where everyone was heading. At the end of the dock was a ship over 16 stories tall from keel to the top of its funnels. The bottom half was black, while the top three decks were white. Its four funnels stood tall like mighty towers. Their bodies were orange except for their black tops. Hundreds of people in third class got in line to be inspected for ailments or physical impairments before getting on the ship through hatch doors set on three sections of the ship at E Deck. People of first and second class boarded through gangplanks connected to the pier and B Deck. Already, people on the ship were waving and saying goodbye to their loved ones from B and C Deck. Photographers and filmmakers were shooting the waving passengers. Some waved back, wishing the passengers luck in Galar. At that moment, Serena forgot what she was doing at the dock. While she had never sailed before, she had seen her fair share of ships in Vermillion City during her tour, but nothing like the Titanic. It was no wonder that so many people were happy to go on the maiden voyage of such a large vessel or that there were so many bystanders on the dock to watch the ship depart. History was being made, and Serena could see everyone was happy to be a part of it.Serena’s moment was interrupted when she heard a low chuckle beside her. She turned her head to see Mivashkama smirking as he stood next to her. His smile gave a sense that Serena had unknowingly boosted his ego by being amazed by the ship he invested in. All joy of witnessing history evaporated as Serena remembered she was doomed to wed the Lord of Hammerlocke. “882 feet 9 inches long and ten decks high. Nearly 100 feet longer than Macro Cosmo’s second largest ship, the Mauretania, and far more luxurious,” Mivashkama said. Serena forced a smile before turning her head back to face the Titanic, trying to pretend Mivashkama wasn’t there. Mivashkama chuckled again with his mouth closed, perhaps interpreting Serena looking away as being bashful or embarrassed that he caught her looking so excited. At the same time, Morfious opened the car door for Oleana, and she walked over to Serena and Mivashkama, analyzing Titanic.“So, this is the ship you say is unsinkable,” she said.“Of course, it’s unsinkable. God himself could not sink the Titanic,” Mivashkama said.“Mivashkama, you mustn’t speak of such things,” Serena rebuked. “The ship is astonishing, but there’s nothing mankind can create that the Lord cannot destroy.”But once again, Mivashkama cackled at Serena’s attitude, looking at her like a child trying to sound smart. “A devoted one. Isn’t she, Oleana?” he said. “Very,” Oleana said with a hint of contempt. Serena scoffed, disgusted with her fiancee and stepmother's lack of care. Just then, a Macro Cosmos Line officer with a thick mustache and spectacles walked over to Mivashkama. The officer was uneasy, as though anything he said would infuriate the lord of a foreign region.“Excuse me, Lord Herløv, I'm afraid you parked at the wrong place,” the officer said. “Your luggage must be checked through the main terminal.” But instead of showing contempt, Mivashkama gave the officer a professional smile and took out a $10 bill from his pocket, which in today's economy would amount to a little over $300. Mivashkama took the officer's hand, put the bill in his palm, and shook his hand. “I leave everything in your hands, good sir,” Mivashkama said. The officer looked at Mivashkama and the $10 bill before he chuckled with a goofy smile. “Y-y-y-yes, sir. Happy to help,” the officer stuttered. “If there's anything else I could do …” Morfious rolled his eyes and grabbed the officer by the collar. “Yes, yes, yes. I'm sure you feel very blessed,” Morfious said as he dragged the man to the cars carrying the luggage. “Now, the luggage is in that car there, and they go to the parlor suite B-52, 54, and 56.”“Yes, right away, sir,” the boarding officer said. The officer took out his whistle and blew, signaling his fellow officers to come to help him. Mivashkama smirked, pleased that his bodyguard got rid of the officer, as though the man doing his job was no better than someone of third class. He then took out his pocket watch and pursed his lips as it was 11:42. “Thought we'd get here with more time,” Mivashkama said before he put his gentleman face back on and turned to Serena and Oliana. “We better hurry, ladies.” Mivashkama wrapped his arm around Serena's arm and led her to a gangplank connected to a door to D Deck. Oleana and Morfious walked behind Mivashkama and Serena, followed by Molly carrying two of Oleana’s suitcases. As they crossed the gangplank, Serena looked back to give the Kanto and Johto regions one last look. No matter how beautiful Titanic was or what a historical moment she was witnessing, she felt less like living a life any young woman would want and more like she was on a slave ship going to Galar in chains with Mivashkama as the slave master guiding her to the boat himself. **********************************************************************************There was a pub on the second floor of one of the buildings close to where the Titanic was docked. Dock workers often went there to have a drink or play cards. Passengers would also stop by for a drink and a game of cards before getting on a ship. Three such individuals were Fernando, Raiden, and Andreas. They were well-built men in their late 30s, having spent many years working at a steel mill in the Johto city of Bonitaville. When they heard about all the opportunities for a better life in the steel industry in the Galar region, they spent most of their savings on third-class tickets to the Titanic. They traveled early to ensure they reached Olivine City with enough time to board the ship, but before leaving, they went to the pub for a drink and a short game of poker. The problem was Fernando, Raiden, and Andreas' poker game was anything but short. They found themselves in a heavy-stakes game against two men over a decade their juniors. The first man had tan skin and messy black hair with two red highlights. The second had hair as black as a raven and z-marks on his cheeks. Sitting next to the tan man was his wife. She had long hair that was a dark shade of pink braided and kept it in a side ponytail while having square bangs hanging on the right side. She wore a white blouse and a dark blue skirt. The tan man and his wife were uneasy with her hand on his shoulder as he reluctantly bid money. Their friend, however, showed no sign of concern. He played his cards carefree as though they were playing a children’s game instead of betting real money. Eventually, all five men decided to go for one more round. After everyone took turns raising the stakes, Fernando, Raiden, and Andreas put all their money in, and, in a shocking move, Andreas put their tickets at the center of the table. With an excited grin, the raven-haired man put all his and his friend's money in without the tan man or his wife's consent. As Andreas stared at his cards, Fernando scooted his chair toward him to whisper into his ear."Why did you bet our tickets? We're only playing to get extra money for Galar," Fernando said."Come on, Fernando. Look how eager Ash is," Andreas whispered, eyeing the raven-haired man. "I got that fool right where I want him."Fernando bit his lip and looked at his cards. Whatever hand Andreas had must have been good enough to win the game. Either that, or he was bluffing. Fernando chugged the rest of his drink and made a small cross on his chest so that his opponents wouldn't notice his unease. The tan man covered his mouth to hide his concern, just as displeased with his hand. He scooted his chair closer to Ash, who was eyeing their opponents with a smirk."Ash, are you out of your mind? If we lose, we'll be penniless," he whispered. "We'll be fine, Goh. As the saying goes, when you got nothing, you've got nothing to lose," Ash said."Who on Earth says that?" Goh’s wife, Chloe, whispered. Ash scratched his cheek and replied with a sheepish grin, "Me."Chloe stared at Ash, baffled, and Goh covered his face with his free hand to hide his irritation. Chloe sighed and rested her head on Goh’s shoulder, afraid to sell what few possessions she had. For the next minute, Goh and Fernando each switched a card, hoping to get a better hand. When they finished, everyone glanced at Andreas’ pocket watch on the table, showing it was getting close to noon. Ash drank the rest of his beer and put on a serious face as he looked between Goh, Fernando, Raiden, and Andreas. "All right, gentleman, it's the moment of truth. Somebody’s life’s about to change," he announced. "Goh, what do you got?" Goh furrowed his brow and put down his cards. A three of clubs, a five of hearts, a seven of diamonds, an eight of clubs, and a queen of diamonds."Nothing," Ash said, sharing his friend's downcast look. "Fernando, how about you?" Fernando glanced at Andreas before he put down his cards. A three of diamonds, a four of diamonds, a six of spades, an eight of diamonds, and a jack of hearts. Raiden huffed and tossed his hand of cards, revealing he was one card away from a royal flush. Everyone turned to Andreas, and he put his cards on the table with an edge of a smirk. Two fives and two kings lay next to a 2 of clubs. Everyone turned to Ash, who sighed and ran his fingers through his messy hair with his free hand before turning to Goh and Chloe. "I'm really sorry, guys," he said. Chloe’s mouth quivered, and she looked away, trying not to cry. "You're sorry?! Are you kidding me?!" Goh shouted. "You don't just bet everything we have, make up some philosophy, and then say -!" "I'm sorry, but neither of you is going to see your parents for a long time, because we're going to the Galar region," Ash finished. Goh's voice died in his throat, and he tilted his head while Chloe turned to Ash with tears running down her face. With a toothy grin, Ash slammed his hand of cards onto the center of the table for everyone to see. Three queens and two sixes. Goh, Chloe, Fernando, Raiden, and Andreas stared at the cards with Andreas feeling his defeat hit him like a ton of bricks. Goh and Chloe looked at the cards and then at Ash, who was cackling. It took Chloe a moment before she jumped out of her seat and screamed joyfully with her hands in the air. Goh’s mouth stretched to the sides of his face and he put his hands on top of his head as he burst out laughing."A full house! You got a full house!" Goh shouted. "I got a full house!" Ash boasted. Ash and Goh stood up and group-hugged with Chloe, all three laughing like mad people. Ash then reached out and pulled the tickets and money toward him when suddenly a hand grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him forward to see Fernando looking daggers at him with his fist up. Ash shut his eyes to brace for the punch, but Ferando's fist swung left and collided with Andreas' nose. Ash opened his eyes to see Andreas rolling over his chair and falling on the floor. Fernando rushed over to his companion and punched him again while unleashing a torrent of insults, including crude remarks about Andreas' mother. People all over the bar roared with laughter as Andreas tried to defend himself. Raiden, meanwhile, stared at Ash’s cards with his hands on his head and resting his elbows against the table, whimpering over losing his hard-earned money.“Better luck next time, Andreas,” Goh said with a mocking grin."Oh my goodness, this is too good to be true," Chole chirped. "It's true, Chloe! We are going to the Galar region!" Ash cheered. "No you ain't, mate,” the bartender called out. "Titanic is going to the Galar region in 5 minutes." Ash, Goh, and Chloe’s faces fell and they turned to see the clock hanging above the wall behind the bartender. It was 11:55. Their hearts sank as they looked out the window to see Titanic at a distance with its whistles blowing. Muttering under his breath, Goh grabbed his duffle bag under his chair and Chloe slid all the money on the table into his bag. Ash grabbed the tickets before he and Chloe grabbed their duffle bags, and the trio rushed to the door. "Bye, guys! Good game!" Ash called out as he exited the pub. Ash, Goh, and Chloe went down the stairs to the ground floor and raced toward Titanic. As they approached the ship, Ash, Goh, and Chloe pushed away bystanders, either taking photos or waving at the passengers while Goh and Chloe held hands. Ash continued to laugh with rapturous glee as he ran, nearly getting himself hit by a horse pulling a cart of supplies. Goh and Chloe apologized to the person driving the cart while trying to keep up with their friend. “Ash, I swear to God, if you lost that game, I would’ve murdered you!” Chloe shouted. “I’m with my wife, Ash! You're the most reckless person I've ever known!” Goh called out. “Maybe, but I've got the tickets!” Ash boasted. They continued bursting through the crowd until they found the closest hatch door to the ship. The hatch door was detached from the gangplank, creating a gap of about 3 feet. Ash, Goh, and Chloe screamed, “Wait,” repeatedly just as a sailor was about to close the hatch door. The sailor stopped just as they ran across the gangplank and Ash showed their tickets. “Have you been through the inspection queue?” he asked. “Of course,” Ash lied. “And besides, we don't have lice. We are Galarians. All three of us.” The sailor hesitated, then nodded and stepped back, allowing Ash, Goh, and Chloe to jump in before the sailor closed the hatch door behind them. As though in one mind, they ran to the nearest staircase to go up on C deck to watch the ship leave the port. Ash continued to lead while Goh cheered with a skip in his step and looked back at Chloe."It must be our destiny to go to Galar, my love," he said. "Just think about its capital. Wyndon: a place with a giant Ferris wheel and a majestic clock tower. Imagine finding our fortune in such a place. I will take you to the Ferris wheel whenever you want.”“I can’t wait,” Chloe squealed. “And if we don’t find our fortune there, there are possibilities all over the region. You could get rich in Hammerlocke, where they power electricity all over the region. Even if that doesn’t work out, there’s opportunity in Motostoke, and Stow-on-Side. Heck, I've heard there's really good money in the mines near Turffield and Hulburry."“Exactly. The sky’s the limit,” Goh said. “And Ash, you can earn boatloads with your drawings.”"Either way, we're living the high life, starting with riding this luxurious ship," Ash said. "Just by being here, we've become regular swells! Practically royalty!"Goh and Chloe cheered as they went up the staircase with Ash. By the time they got to C deck, Titanic's three whistles had blown one last time. The ship’s massive dock ropes were taken off the docks' metal bollards, and three tugboats began pulling Titanic away from shore. Ash, Goh, and Chloe went outside and raced to the forward deck, where there was space in the port railing for them to wave to the crowd. Ash put down his duffle bag and began waving his hand vigorously. "Ash, we don't know anybody down there," Goh said."It doesn't matter. They're wishing everyone on the ship a happy voyage," Ash said. "Think of less like we're saying goodbye to anyone personally and more like we're saying goodbye to Kanto and Johto."Goh and Chloe hesitated, preferring to only say goodbye to their family, despite the fact that they were in Vermilion City. Still, the young couple understood that Ash thought of saying goodbye to the connected regions was a way of moving on from everything they knew, as it was likely they would never come back. Goh shook his head and began waving at the crowd as well. “Goodbye! I'll never forget you all!” He said jokingly. Chloe giggled before waving farewell with her husband and their best friend. As the tugboats pulled Titanic farther away from the dock, Ash, Goh, and Chloe looked beyond the dock and Olivine City, seeing the landscape and mountains far away. They smiled, reflecting on their travels throughout the Kanto and Johto regions that led them to this moment. They grabbed their bags and walked closer to the bow as the tugboats rotated Titanic to face the open ocean ahead. Chloe wrapped her arms around Goh’s waist from behind, and Goh turned his head to give her a loving smile before their lips connected. Ash watched his best friend and his wife kiss with a toothy grin before walking over to the edge of the railing and staring at the sea, confident that the best days of their lives were just ahead.*************************************************************************************Standing on the balcony next to the bridge was an old, tall, muscular man with a white mustache. He watched the passengers below wave goodbye to the people at the dock with a warm smile and his hands on the railing. Some of them were first and second class passengers he had personally welcomed to the ship. In truth, Captain Drake cared little about making history by commanding the largest ship in the world, but it did his heart good to see so many people excited to enjoy riding on a luxurious ship, especially when many were going to Galar in hopes of vastly improving their lives. If there were any particular reason to feel honored to command the Titanic, it would be giving people of third class that chance.Eventually, the ropes connected to the tugboats were detached from Titanic, and the tugboats sailed back to port. A tall officer with wild deep blue hair walked over to the captain with his hands behind his back. He looked at the open sea then at the captain with a smile, which Captain Drake returned. "Anything to report, Mr. Marlon?" Captain Drake asked his first officer."We've departed on time, no other ships around us, and, as you can see, we've got nothing but ocean ahead of us, sir," Marlon said. "The Marconi Room has also received warnings of possible icebergs near our route, though.""Noted," Drake said. "If that is all, then take her to sea, Mr. Marlon. Let's stretch her legs.""Yes, sir," Marlon said.Marlon went inside the wheelhouse, where the helmsman, Kanoa, was behind the wheel. Standing beside him was a slender young man with short slicked-down blue hair that had a long side fringe that covered his right eye."All ahead full, Cress," Marlon said."Very good, sir," said the officer with the slicked down blue hair. Marlon and Cress walked to the Engine Order Telegraphs standing next to the wheel on opposite sides and moved the handles, sending messages to the engine room to go all ahead full. The engine room relayed the message to Titanic’s boiler rooms, and the firemen wasted no time shoveling lumps of coal into the ovens. Within a couple of minutes, Titanic's two engines roared with life, and the ship began picking up speed. Marlon checked the speedometer, then walked over to Captain Drake again, who was still looking at the sea ahead. “21 knots, sir,” Marlon reported. “Excellent, Marlon,” Captain Drake said. “And to think she can go that fast with all but four of her boilers lit.”“Indeed, it's an impressive amount of speed for such a large vessel, sir,” Marlon said. “Maybe we ought to light the other four to see how fast it goes? Get you on a ship from Wyndon to Hoenn for your retirement sooner.”Captain Drake chuckled and said, “No, there's no need for that. My retirement isn't going anywhere. Let's let our passengers enjoy the voyage. “Very good, sir. I'm sure it will be a voyage to remember,” Marlon said.Captain Drake chuckled again and nodded. The captain and the first officer turned to face the ocean again, admiring the view and enjoying the salty air. Then Captain Drake looked down and noticed Ash, Goh, and Chloe were still at the bow with their bags. The third-class passengers were standing at the very end of the bow, imagining Wyndon already in view at a distance. Suddenly, Ash shook his fists in the air and shouted proudly. "Galar region, here we come!"Goh and Chloe laughed before cheering together with Ash. Captain Drake and Marlon chuckled at their enthusiasm before the former left for lunch. "A voyage to remember indeed," Captain Drake said.
Titanic Chapter 1When people hear about Serena Yvonne through documentaries or books about the Titanic, they would say she was engaged to Lord Mivashkama Herløv of Hammerlocke, that she went missing the night Titanic sank, and then is briefly mentioned in regards to her stepmother's second marriage. While historians and survivors of the ship are correct in one form or another, this is a gross oversimplification as she was far more than just the fiancee of the late Lord of Hammerlocke. Serena was the daughter of the Duke of Viridian City in the Kanto region. Her mother, Grace Yvonne, passed away when she was only 10, and so for much of her preteen and early teenage years, it was just her and her beloved father. As she got older, Serena Yvonne developed a love of dancing and partook in the performing arts in her girls' high school. Those from Viridian City back then that are still alive remember her dancing with such joy and passion that she made others smile whenever they watched her. Some referred to her as Serena Two-Step because she could uplift the gloomiest person in the world with just two dance steps. When she completed school, Serena began to tour throughout Kanto, performing in front of thousands, with her father financially supporting her. While Serena traveled around the region, the duke was lonely as a middle-aged man and decided to marry again. Thus, when Serena visited home between trips, she was surprised to learn that he had married his secretary, Oleana. Those in Viridian City that knew the duke say that it was highly peculiar that the duke would marry her. Part of that had to do with the fact that Oleana wasn’t someone of high class, but mostly because they were polar opposites. Duke Yvonne was a cheerful and carefree chap, which would explain how he was such a loving father who supported Serena's passion. In contrast, Oleana always kept her emotions in check and was only about fifteen years Serena’s senior. Based on our interviews, Aunt Sonia and I guess that the duke thought he connected with Oeana because they were opposites. That Oleana was the perfect wife for keeping his carefree attitude in check. Nevertheless, Serena gave her stepmother the benefit of the doubt and was okay with the marriage as long as it made her father happy. When we interviewed those still alive who remember Serena's life before the Titanic, they were immediately dispirited when we asked them about her engagement with Lord Herløv. I was shocked by how simply saying the man's name led to the people we interviewed having cold looks of contempt. It was as though I said a trigger word that made them instantly forget all the joy they felt from talking about the duke's daughter even though they had never met Lord Herløv.On October 17th, 1911, Serena performed at the grand theater at the Indigo Plateau. The show was sold out several weeks in advance, and some who couldn't get tickets tried to sneak into the theater the night of the performance. The people there said they were in a trance when Serena danced, smiling in bliss while she wore a magenta pink dress and tiara resting on her short head of honey blonde hair. One critic called her the goddess of dancing in human form. He even named his eldest daughter after Serena a couple of years later. When the show ended, the crowd applauded for a couple of minutes, and Serena kept bowing, grateful that they enjoyed her show so much.As soon as the curtains closed, however, a crew member came to Serena and requested her presence in her dressing room. Serena followed him off the stage and grew confused as she noticed other crew members avoiding eye contact with her. The crew member opened the door to the dressing room, and Serena went in, finding her manager, Palermo, talking to two men in suits while holding a piece of paper. Palermo saw Serena come in, and she gave her a crestfallen look as she walked over to her."Palermo, what's wrong?" Serena asked. Palermo hesitated before she looked at the paper in her hand and then back at Serena."Serena, these men came here to deliver a telegraph from Viridian City," she said. "Your father…he is dead."Serena's face fell. She stood in place for a moment before she took a step back and asked, "W-what?""He had pneumonia," Palermo said. "The doctors did all they could, but the medicine wasn't working. I'm so sorry.”Serena shook her head in disbelief and snatched the telegraph from Palermo's hand. She read through the telegraph, and her heart broke with each sentence confirming what Palermo said. She teared up when she finished reading, and the telegraph fell from her hand. Palermo stepped up to pull Serena into a hug as she broke down. The crew member and the men in suits quietly excused themselves and left the dressing room to give the women space. When Serena finished crying, her eyes were red and puffy, and Palermo rubbed her back as she sniffed. “I-I-I’ve got to get home,” Serena whimpered. “Don’t worry. I've ordered a car to take you to a train back to Viridian City,” Palermo said. “I'll telegraph to your stepmother that you are on your way as soon as you leave.” Serena smiled weakly at her manager and said, “Thank you, Palermo. I don't know how I could handle this without you.”“Think nothing of it, child. Now, go pack your things," Palermo said. Serena nodded and began packing right away. By the time she had finished, a car was waiting at the back of the theater, and she hugged Palermo, struggling not to cry again before she got in and the driver took her to the city's train station. Serena rode in a private car for three days, her mind fixed on her late father. She tried to reason with herself that it was a bad dream. It didn't seem right that she would suddenly lose her father, having never received a word that he was ill in any way prior. She technically still had a parent in the form of her stepmother, Oleana, but by God, the duke was her whole world since she was a little girl. All the things that made her the benevolent person she grew up to be came from her father. On the third day, the train arrived at Viridian City, and a car was waiting for Serena. As the car took her to the outskirts of the city where the family manor resided, Serena's heart began to ache again, dreading to see her father's body and the manor to feel less of a home without his presence. She resigned to putting such thoughts in the back of her head, reminding herself that Oleana and the staff were grieving too.But as the car approached the manor, she noticed several trucks coming down the road in the opposite direction. Serena watched in confusion as there was no other place they could have come from but the manor. When the car reached the manor grounds, more trucks were parked in front of the house, and, to Serena's disbelief, men were loading furniture, paintings, chests of clothes, and heirlooms. Standing at the front entrance was Oleana overseeing the possessions being taken, and next to her was a maid a few years older than Serena with light brown hair, holding a handkerchief to her eye. As soon as the car stopped, Serena got out and raced to Oleana and the maid. New tears formed in the maid's eyes as she ran over to meet Serena, but Oleana remained in place, unfazed by Serena’s return."My lady," the maid sobbed as she rushed into Serena's arms.Serena gave the maid a sad smile as she hugged her back. They embraced for a few seconds before Serena broke the hug."Molly, what's going on? Why are these men taking my family's things?" She asked. Molly's mouth quivered and she hung her head, unable to look Serena in the eye. "They've been sold, miss. The mistress has ordered all but a few essentials to be sold," she said."What?! But these things have been in the family for generations. They can't take them from us," Serena said."Actually, as the new head of this family, I have the authority to sell what I wish," Oleana said, walking down the steps to meet Serena. "But why? My father wouldn't want us to part with any of our possessions," Serena said. "Then he should have thought of that before squandering the family fortune and leaving us in debt," Oleana said. "W-what?" Serena asked. "Your father spent our money on financing your little tour," Oleana said. "I warned him multiple times not to borrow money recklessly. That simply being a well-respected aristocrat doesn't mean it's raining money, but that stubborn fool wouldn't listen to reason.”“But we can't be in so much debt that we must sell everything,” Serena protested. “My shows have made a ton of profit and -”“And that excuses being penniless for the sake of your little dances?” Oleana rebuked. “I suppose you hope by continuing your little tour, all our debts would magically be erased, and we'd have our fortune back? Perhaps you want this family to continue investing in your little hobby to make even more money, and when you break your leg while dancing, there goes any sort of profit. I think enough has happened financially just because your father spoiled you.” “Then what are we going to do?” Serena asked. “What can I do?"“The money we've made from selling these possessions, reducing the staff, and your tour will pay off a decent amount of the debts, but it will only be a matter of time before we will be penniless,” Oleana said. “If you want to contribute, then you will fulfill your duty as an aristocrat's daughter. In short, we must arrange for you to get married.”“Married?! But I can't get married just for the money,” Serena protested.“You can and you will,” Oliana said. “I shall spread the word among members of the high class that you are available for an arranged marriage. With fortune on our side, your father's good name will provide us with a match to secure us for life.”“But I don't want there to be an arranged marriage," Serena said. “Why can't I just continue to -” “Silence!” Oliana hissed, immediately shutting Serena up. “You are 24 years old now, Serena, and you have been indulging in your fantasies long enough. You've had your fun, now pay for it by fulfilling your duty for both of our sakes.” Oleana went inside the house without another word to continue supervising the men taking away the possessions. Serena stared at where she last saw her stepmother before she hung her head, fighting the urge to cry again while Molly rubbed her back. The maid took Serena's hand and gently guided Serena into the house to her bedroom to privately mourn. ************************************************************************************************A couple of weeks had passed after Serena returned home. Her father's funeral was held at the Viridian City Chapel, and many of her father's friends and some of her admirers attended, giving her comfort knowing how many people valued her father. Apart from attending the funeral, however, Serena rarely left her bedroom, for it was hard to be anywhere else in the house, where rooms were empty of any family possessions. All Serena could do was sit in a chair outside her bedroom window and stare at the world outside, emotionless. As time passed, Serena heard from Molly that suitors had been visiting the manor to be interviewed. Oleana ordered that Serena be kept in her bedroom while interviewing the men. She did not trust Serena to decide on her fiancee, given her emotion-broken state and ideals of wanting any attachment with wherever she marries. While many gentlemen of high class and good renown had come to ask for Serena’s hand, Oleana rejected every single one. Some only stayed at the manor for a few minutes before Oleana rejected them. The more men Serena's stepmother rejected, the more Serena worried that her stepmother's skepticism would drive away all of the suitors, thus dooming them. Finally, in the 5th week since her father's passing, there was a knock on Serena's door, and Molly opened it for Oleana to come in. There was a hint of a smile on Oleana's otherwise expressionless face as she walked over to Serena. “Serena, we have finally found a match. The best that I could hope for, in fact,” Oleana announced. “This person's wealth is to your liking, stepmother?” Serena asked. “More than that. This gentleman is a lord from the Galar region. A lord," Oliana said with giddiness in her voice. "The Galar region? What is a lord from the Galar region doing here in Kanto?" Serena asked. "It just so happens that he has business in the Johto region and is also searching for a wife," Oleana said. "He heard about our situation and your father's good name and decided to come here to propose. A lord of such a good name and wealth on top of being a businessman in a region with a growing economy? How could anyone refuse?""But if I marry this person, we would have to move to Galar," Serena said. Oleana's subtle smile turned sour."What? You were hoping the person you marry would come to stay here just because it's your father's home?" Oleana asked. "Were you to have a brother and we still had our fortune, that might be possible, but as it is, you're attached to a hollow place out of sentiment. Now, dress up. Lord Herløv is waiting downstairs. Molly, tighten her corset more than normal. We want to make a good impression on our guest." "Yes, ma'am," Molly said.Oleana left the room before Serena could protest again. Molly stepped in and took Serena's hand, guiding her to her dressing chamber. Serena struggled not to show any distress as Molly helped her change, and not because of how tight her corset was. She had never left the region before, and now she had to leave everything she knew for good, so she and Oleana could be financially secure again. Molly looked at Serena as she buttoned the back of her grayish-yellow dress and gave her an encouraging smile. "Don't worry, my lady. Maybe it'll be good for you to leave your father's home," Molly said. "You can create a new home for your children to treasure when they grow up."Serena turned her head to Molly and gave her a small smile, appreciative of her vain attempt to cheer her up. After getting dressed, Serena and Molly descended to the main floor and walked to the dining hall, where Oleana sat at the dining table with a man sitting opposite to her. The man was wide-chested and well-groomed, wearing a dark gray tux with a golden "H" on the left pocket of his coat. He was not easy on the eyes, but Serena thought he was within limits for someone a decade older than her. The man noticed Serena come in and stood up to take a bow. His smile didn’t come off as friendly as it was merely standard procedure. Standing behind the man was a tall, bald man in his mid-50s. He stood straight with his hands behind his back like a military officer and wore a black suit with a pale pink vest and tie. “Ah, there you are,” Oleana said with a professional smile. “Serena, let me introduce you to Lord Mivashkama Herløv of Hammerlocke.”“How do you do, Lord Herløv?” Serena greeted as she curtsied. “How do you do, Serena?” Mivashkama replied. “And please, just call me Mivashkama. There’s no need for us to be formal. Is there?”“No, I guess not,” Serena said. Serena looked over Mivashkama’s shoulder and noticed the other man looking at her with a stern glare in his bright yellow eyes. Mivashkama looked at Serena, confused, until he realized she was looking past him and chuckled. “It's alright, Serena. That's my manservant, Morfious Korvashka," he said, speaking to Serena as though she were a child afraid to touch an animal. “You'll have to forgive him. He takes his job seriously. Morfious, say hello to my fiancee.”“Good afternoon, madam,” Morfious said in a monotone voice. “Good afternoon, Morfious,” Serena said, still feeling a chill from Morfious’ gaze. “There, that's better,” Mivashkama said. “Now tell me, Serena, what do you know about the economy in Galar?”“Er, nothing at all, my lor - Mivashkama,” Serena answered. “I did not think a lady was required to know about such things.”“No, you're right. Such things are for the man of one's house to know,” Mivashkama said. “Still, I wish to impress you on how secure you will be as the Lady of Hammerlocke. The Galar region is rich in industry. As a lord, I oversee the progress of such things in my section of the region. And while I hardly need to invest in the business, considering how well endowed I am, my investments are unrivaled anywhere else in Galar or the entire world. In short, you will want for nothing, unlike when living with your father, rest in peace."Serena fought the urge to frown at how Mivashkama spoke about her father.“No disrespect, but I consider that a tall claim. My father may not be everything you've accomplished, but he provided for me with all this heart,” Serena said. “Yes, your stepmother has told me as much. A silly, risky business, the performing arts,” Mivashkama said. “As far as I'm concerned, that simply shows how little your father could provide a life of real high class and luxury. As a matter of fact, our engagement cannot come at the most opportune time. We are all going to Galar together in my greatest investment yet.”“I thought you said business is not for a lady to know,” Serena said. Mivashkama chuckled condescendingly as though Serena should’ve known what he was referring to.“Titanic is not a business. Titanic is a ship. The greatest ship there ever was or will be created by the shipping company Macro Cosmos and funded by me. Large, luxurious, and completely unsinkable,” Mivashkama explained. “In three months, the Titanic will be on its maiden voyage from Olivine City in the Johto region to your new home in Galar.”“Oh my, that sounds marvelous,” Oleana said. "Three months should be more than enough time for planning your wedding in Hammerlocke. If it pleases you, Lord Herløv, I would like to take part in planning the wedding."“By all means, madam, plan the wedding as much as you like,” Mivashkama said. “Which reminds me. I have something for you, Serena,” He reached into his jacket and took out a little black box. Mivashkama held the box out to Serena and opened it, revealing an engagement ring. Its band was almost as thick as a wedding ring to support the diamond shaped like a cursive “H.” Without giving Serena a moment to react to the gift, Mivashkama took the ring out of the box and put it on her finger. Mivashkama then leaned in for a kiss on Serena's cheek, if one could call barely touching the skin a kiss. Serena forced a smile as Mivashkama pulled back, and Mivashkama smiled back before clearing his throat and turning to Oleana. "Well, now that everything's official, I must be off. Still much business to attend to all over Kanto and Johto," he said as he took out a check from his left pocket and handed it to Oleana. "I trust this should be enough to pay off your debts, leave you with a suitable budget for planning the wedding, and otherwise simulate you while I'm gone.""Yes, this should be plenty," Oleana said as she stared at the check with a pleased smirk. "Good. I shall return in three months, and we shall be on our way to Johto. Good day, ladies," Mivashkama said. With that, he left the dining room with Morfious following, the latter not bothering to say goodbye. When she heard the front door close, Oleana stood up from her seat and left to get her coat and hat before taking a trip to the bank. Serena waited until her stepmother was gone before choking out a sob. Molly put her arm around Serena and took her hand before guiding her back to her room. Serena couldn't believe that of all the men Oleana could force her to marry, it was someone who only appeared genuine on top of sharing Oleana's views against her passion. Serena wished she could have met the other suitors, who might’ve had more heart and consideration than Mivashkama."Now, there's no use fretting, Ms. Serena. First impressions aren't everything," Molly said. "Many couples take time growing close whether they marry or not. In time, Lord Herløv will develop real affection for a remarkable young lady like you."Once again, Serena gave Molly a sad smile in appreciation. She wanted to believe there could be more to being married to Mivashkama and spending the rest of her life as a lady in the Galar region. Still, Serena felt her loyal maid was hoping in vain. Her life as she knew it was over. One way or another, her new life would begin on the Titanic.
Titanic IntroductionFor my dear Aunt Sonia. Thank you for everything we accomplished together. May your legacy live on. My name is T.G.G. Ketchum, and for as long as I can remember, there have been all kinds of tales about the sinking of the Titanic. Indeed, by the time I was in elementary school, the event was told in social studies class. The Macro Cosmos Herløv Titanic, better known as the MCH Titanic, was the largest ship in the world. It was on its maiden voyage to Wyndon in the Galar region from Olivine City in the Johto region with 2,200 people on board. Halfway through the journey on April 14th, 1912, it hit an iceberg and sank, resulting in the deaths of more than two-thirds of the people on board. But even before learning about it in school, my family had their own stories about the Titanic. For better and for worse, it was a significant part of our history. As I got older, I developed a passion for writing stories unrelated to Titanic, but it has always been in the back of my mind to write this book. And so, Aunt Sonia and I spent several years researching on the Titanic, and combining our family stories with other people’s stories, both told and untold, to give our own version of what happened. Now, there are three problems why we aren't only telling my family's stories: the first is that many people have focused on their own stories in interviews, autobiographies, and the occasional documentary. So, it would be difficult for this book to stand out. The second is that much of Titanic's history is either commonly known or rarely mentioned, and as a survivor, Aunt Sonia wanted it all to be told. Third and most importantly, just saying who the people on the ship are and what their fates are would dishonor them. The people on the ship were not simply historical figures of the event or contributions to the number of deaths or survivors. These were real people with dreams, goals, friends, and loved ones who lost so much. Instead, I want to tell their stories narratively. Nothing I say will be completely accurate word for word, leastways when the people Aunt Sonia and I interviewed can only recollect so much. Still, I will do my best to capture, if nothing else, the spirits of who these people were and what they experienced on that fateful voyage. And so, dear reader, I hope you will put what you've heard about the Titanic to the back of your mind as I tell these stories. Stories of wonder, idolatry, friendship, discrimination, joy, fear, unity, and broken pride. But above all else, the story is about two particular passengers on board the Titanic named Ash Ketchum and Serena Yvonne....
